Cerebral Palsy Fighter
Hi, My Name is Samantha Maravilla & I'm from Commerce, California. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 2. I just had a reconstructive surgery for my feet, hips and legs. I'm now 18, and in rehab therapy recovering from the surgery. It's been close to five months since surgery. I've been doing well ever since I'm also trying to get involved in The Rolletes of Los Ángeles, a dance team for men & women who have disabilities.
Having a disability is difficult at times, but I'm very blessed. I try to do more than what's expected. I graduated from Bell Gardens High School Class Of 2016. I was working for the school library my last three years of high school to gain some independence.
After I graduated, I still wanted some work experience so I joined the Yes Summer Program for teens to volunteer and receive a check after completing 200 hours. In the mix of working for the City Hall, I was asked to be featured in the city newspaper 'Report To The People' to do my own story on what The City of Commerce The Model City has to offer for someone who has a disability. People who have disabilities are not always given a fair chance, but I try to push myself to the limit because If there's a will there's a way!
Disabled People are not a group of people who look different. We're a community of people who can take over the world! Remember If You Can't Stand Up, Stand Out!
