The Accident That Changed My Life
Hi, my name is Nekia. I am 25 years old. In October 2015 I was in a near fatal car accident in which I lost my foot/ankle on site. This caused me to have a below the knee amputation along with several other complications. I had a brain injury, lacerated liver, facial fractures, my organs had to be shifted back into place, my spleen had to be taken out and lungs collapsed. I lost 7 pints of blood, which resulted in a blood transfusion. I also had a broken femur and a fractured knee joint which resulted in my knee having to be reconstructed and a rod inserted in my femur.
Receiving A Prosthetic Leg
There were 14 surgeries in total to help me start the healing and rehabilitation process. I was at Grady hospital for 1 1/2 months, and then moved to The Shepard Center in Atlanta, GA to start intensive rehabilitation for six weeks. I started out in a wheelchair, and then moved to using to a walker. Shortly after using the walker, I received my prostheses. In the first two weeks of receiving my prosthetic leg, I used a cane to assist with my walking. Shortly after I began to walk on my own. My total recovery was around eight months.
Pursuing My Dreams
I'm stronger than I've ever been today with the love and support of my family, friends, and rehabilitation team. I give all praises to God as I would have not made it this far without my faith. I'm in college to become an accountant and working full time. I love to take pictures and workout in my free time. I recently hiked up Stone Mountain Georgia alone, which was a goal of mine. My ultimate goal and dream is to become a prosthetic model for those with disabilities. I'm driven and passionate about everything that I put my mind to do. I know one day I will be in a magazine, commercial or even billboard. I love life and everything it has too offer! All I have to do is put my mind to do whatever it is I dream of doing.
