One Leg to Stand On

Adapting, Not Accepting

My name is Amy, and I am 25 years old. I was born with a birth defect that caused me to be born without my right leg. I've been blessed to have an incredible family and support system to help challenge and support me as I've grown up learning to live a bit differently than my peers. Obviously missing the entirety of my right leg has had its challenges, and there have been times that I've been extremely self-conscious. In high school, I did what I could to blend in and hide my prosthesis, refusing to wear shorts and trying my best to avoid working out and any activity that would draw attention to my prosthesis.

Moving Forward In Life With One Leg

Over the last few years, I decided to take a different approach. With the help of my faith, family, and friends, I started to push myself out of my comfort zone and try new physical challenges. I decided to embrace my body as it is and to be confident in how God made me.

Since then, I've taken up boxing and tried a new type of prosthesis that allows me to be more active. I'm sure life will continue to bring new challenges, and I won't always react in the best way, but I'm excited to continue moving forward. I don't want to presume that I can be an inspiration to anyone, but I do want to show people that missing a limb is no reason to give up or hold back. My prosthetic leg does not define me; it is simply a tool that allows me to push boundaries and live life to the fullest.

I was born with one leg and I make way too many jokes about it.
